Interview with the Designer: Loree Jill Weeks

The designer behind The Little Design Shop, Loree Jill Weeks, has been in the industry for 26 years which started with a bachelor's degree in Interior Design. She has been running her own interior design business, LJW Interior Design, successfully for many years. Now, she has ventured into the e-commerce realm in efforts to bring her design to a wider audience in an approachable way and to spark the innate creativity in those who wish to create a beautiful home.

What is the main reason for starting The Little Design Shop on top of your personal design business?

I know that people want their homes to be beautifully put together. In my personal design business, LJW Interior Design, my projects are complete transformations of a house from structural changes down to the art and accessories, which is not a reality for most people, including myself. So, I started The Little Design Shop so everyone can have the opportunity to create beautiful little spaces. Even if they only have one little niche to work with.

How would you describe The Little Design Shop?

We are your in-house designer. The Little Design Shop consists of home vignettes. A vignette is a grouping of design elements, such as furniture, art, and accessories, that give purpose to otherwise overlooked spaces.

The vignettes I create are usually for the spaces that people do not know what to do with. I’ve also found that a majority of people have a style all their own but need guidance when it comes to scale and proportion. The Little Design Shop acts as a tool to create beautiful spaces that work.

What’s the story behind the name The Little Design Shop?

I’ve always liked little things and design always starts little. Design is baby steps, design is an art, at least the way I design. You start with a niche or a piece of furniture or a purpose and you go from there.

Why is interior design important to you?

We spend the majority of our lives at home, your house has to enrich your life. It’s that simple.

Where do you pull inspiration from?

Design encompasses so many elements, I guess if I pulled one from a hat it would be purpose. Then it’s like a lotus flower blooming. If we’re talking about designers who have influenced me, off the top of my head would be Elsie De Wolfe, Alexa Hampton, & Frank Lloyd Wright.

What do you hope people will take away from The Little Design Shop?

That your house can be whatever you want it to be. That each space in your home doesn’t have to be used in the traditional sense. If you don’t have a designated bar area, you can create a bar. You are allowed to go against the grain and get creative with what you do with your little spaces.

I also want people to have fun and get creative with creating their space. The vignettes should act as little pieces of inspiration that will motivate you to imagine more for the somewhat neglected spaces in your home. Inviting you into the process and making it your own hopefully accomplishes that.
